RAILWAYS

Stone Central  have worked for Network Rail for the last 20 years through a variety of different Principal Contractors, gaining a wealth of experience on Railway Infrastructure projects, working to Network Rail standards. Our Personal Track Safety (PTS) qualified stonemasons can work trackside, allowing us to carry out essential maintenance and repairs within restricted areas.

Recent work has involved supplying and fixing new stone to match listed bridges along the Stephenson’s Liverpool to Manchester line, including a number of original Stations such as the impressive Liverpool Lime Street Station. We also undertake specialist brickwork repairs to structures within the railways and have recently replaced 90,000 bricks to a Grade II Listed Viaduct in Holmes Chapel, constructed in 1841. The majority of the re-casing work was required to the arch barrels, meaning Ribs and Laggings (T’s and Sweeps) were used to allow the bricks to be replaced 

Station Refurbishments

We have worked on several station refurbishments including the impressive Liverpool Lime Street, Manchester Piccadilly, Crewe and Carlisle Stations. We planned the works to ensure that minimum disruption is caused and ensuring the safety of the public is our highest priority. We can perform repairs to stonework on the interior and exterior of these sites as well as cleaning and refurbishment work.

Trackside Work

Our stonemasons have undertaken all necessary PTS training to allow us to safely carry out trackside repairs and renewals for the railway network. This work has involved restoring and rebuilding approach walls as well as necessary maintenance. Our team can safely carry out work in 'live' environments and understand the challenges this brings, keeping disruption to a minimum.

Bridges & Viaducts

Bridge & viaduct work often involves working in difficult circumstances, either at height or over water, we have vast experience of this, completing numerous projects. We have been paramount in the restoration, repair and renewal of some major bridge reveals and repairs. We worked with main contractors in the linking of the railway network from north to south Manchester (Stevenson’s Bridge /Ordsall Chord).

Historical Work

We have experience working alongside Historic England and other conservation bodies, as well as Local Authorities and Architects. We are happy to undertake work on historic sites on the rail network. This had included bringing bridges back into use as well as repairing and restoring other sites of historic interest.
