This Grade II listed bridge suffered a partial collapse due to extensive flooding caused by Storm Eva, splitting the town in two.
This historical bridge was a vital link between the two halves of the town. A large midsection collapsed and was washed away, which was captured during a live television broadcast (see link below). A temporary footbridge was built to offer people a way to get the other side however, there was no other way for vehicles to cross the river. This forced people to take an inconvenient diversion that added miles onto their journey
Project Detail
Stone Central were appointed to survey the damage and produce a schedule of works to restore the Grade II listed bridge to unite the town. This grading meant that we were governed by strict parameters on the materials and techniques that could be used. We completed the work using the same stone and mortars, ensuring the new works were in keeping with the original structure.
The work was completed under some challenging weather and access conditions. Stone Central rebuilt the missing spans and arches, completed the missing parapet and replaced the coping stones in Magnesian Limestone to match the original.
Once the finished work was completed, access was again granted to vehicles to cross the bridge and the town was reunited.
