This project involved the carving of a beautiful Victorian stone fireplace as part of the transformation of a Grade II* listed building into a flagship DoubleTree by Hilton hotel.
The building on Sir Thomas Street in Liverpool was originally built as a gentleman’s club in the 19th century. It has many beautiful features including sweeping staircases, carved pillars, stained glass windows and ornate marble fireplaces. After standing empty for a number of years the building was eventually restored to its former glory.
As recently as the 1990s the building was used as an annexe for the city’s Municipal buildings, which stand next door which has now been turned into one of the most desirable hotels in the north-west.
Project Detail
We were contacted when it became apparent that a large, carved stone fireplace had been removed from the building at some point during the years it had stood empty. Working solely from a life size image provided to us by the client, we were asked to replicate the fireplace.
We carved an entirely new piece to replace the one that had been lost, including intricate detailing throughout. Our team worked in our workshop with just the picture for reference and using our expertise and years of experience, we were able to create an amazing replica of the original fireplace.
The fireplace is now back in the building and is a stunning addition to the restoration.
