Birkenhead Priory is Merseyside’s oldest building dating back to 1150. The Benedictine Monks supervised the first regulated ferry crossing ‘Ferry ‘cross the Mersey’ which remained in place for almost 400 years.
Stone Central were proud to be commissioned to carry out restoration and repairs on the Priory’s St Mary’s Tower.
Project Detail
Being a Grade II listed building our expertise in the use of traditional techniques and materials was essential in ensuring the historical fabric of the building was maintained. Our highly skilled team of Stonemasons worked the individual replacement components to match the original profiles before fixing them in place. St Bees red sandstone was used as the closest sourced match to the original stone and all pointing was undertaken using traditional lime mortar.
