The main contractors appointed to build the new café and visitor centre at the summit of Snowdon approached us to assess the viability of cladding the structure in granite.
Due to the difficult location of the project, which is situated at 3,560 feet, the contractors wanted to be sure that the cladding would be able to be fixed to the building before moving ahead.
Project Detail
To ensure the project’s viability, a section of the cladding was constructed offsite in Shotton Steelworks. Here we were able to demonstrate how we would attach the granite securely to the steel frame of the proposed building. Due to the location, consideration needed to be given to the extreme weather conditions that the building was going to have to endure.
Following the success of the trial, we were contracted to carry out the granite cladding to the exterior of the café and visitor centre.
The project was challenging at times due to the extremes of weather at the summit, as well as how quickly the weather changed throughout the day. However, we completed the works to the satisfaction of all involved, and the café is now used regularly by more than half a million visitors a year.
