STONEMASONRY RESTORATION CLEANING CONSULTANCY Memorials & Statues NEW BUILD RAILWAYS SURVEYS TERRACOTTAThis award-winning project involved extending the Leeds-Liverpool canal via Salthouse Dock and giving access to the River Mersey. The removal, restoration and relocation of several large statues was also undertaken.
The Leeds Liverpool canal has been extended to flow into Liverpool city centre, enhancing the impressive waterfront, passing in front of the famous 3 Graces buildings. Previously, the canal terminated two miles outside of the city centre and had become degraded and unappealing. The project was intended to boost tourism to the area, creating a focal point, event space and a brand new Mersey Ferry Terminal.
Stone Central were engaged to complete multiple aspects of this project. We removed three large statues on granite plinths – the statues then went to the conservation centre to be re bronzed and returned to us. The plinths were rebuilt and reconstructed stone by stone in their new location, and the statues where then reinstated. Moving statues of this size is a complex and logistically challenging process.
We also supplied and fitted granite for the 3 bridges that cross the canal link at the Pier Head.
The original Salt House Dock wall had to be removed to create a new entrance for the canal. The stones were very large pieces of red sandstone and these had to be reworked on site to create a curved wall opening to allow the canal and narrow boats to pass through. This was a huge undertaking in a difficult environment, working and shaping such large pieces of stone on site can be very challenging. We also built the granite bridges that span the canal allowing foot traffic to flow easily in the area.
The project won The People’s Choice Award in 2020 and we are proud to have played such an integral role in the success.
